Lesbians didn’t always get to see themselves on screen. But between Stonewall, the feminist movement, and the experimental cinema of the 1970s, they built visibility and transformed the social imagination about queerness. DYKES, CAMERA, ACTION! features an array of filmmakers, including Barbara Hammer, Su Friedrich, Rose Troche, Cheryl Dunye, and Vicky Du. Film critics B. Ruby Rich, Jenni Olson, and Sarah Schulman contextualize the history of queer women’s films and share moving and often hilarious stories from their lives as well as discussing the expression of queer identity through film. DYKES, CAMERA, ACTION! functions as an updated—but much more modern and far less bleak—THE CELLULOID CLOSET, with a walk down memory lane, from the 1960s through the 1990s’ New Queer Cinema and all the way to the lesbian films of the 21st century. It’s a ton of fun to spend time with the dozens of women who helped to create the cinema that has shaped so many lives, and, in the process, learn how we all got here.
