NOBODY’S WATCHING is a beautiful and touching examination of the immigrant experience in America. Nico, once a famous actor in his native Argentina, has left behind his older lover, Martin, and moved to New York with the promise of film work and a permanent visa. In New York, he juggles a variety of odd jobs to keep himself afloat while pursing acting roles. As time passes and he becomes more desperate, socially and financially, just to stay on the lowest rung of the American economic ladder, he struggles to realize his dream.
Guillermo Pfening as Nico delivers a masterful performance in this moving depiction of what it is to be a struggling actor and an immigrant in one of the most vibrant cities in the world. Director Julia Solomonoff’s touching feature presents a timely portrait of immigrant solitude. The film’s intense but ultimately uplifting vision vividly highlights the immigrant experience, gay life, loneliness and the role that so-called failure can play as a stepping stone to self-discovery.
