Rebekah Fortune’s sensitive family drama is a film about everything and nothing changing all at once. On the soccer field, Charlie (newcomer Harry Gilby) thrives and seems to have the world quite literally at her feet when an offer to play professionally comes along. And no one is more excited by this opportunity than her overbearing and pushy father (Scot Williams). While athletic glory seems just within reach, happiness for Charlie is even further away, as Fortune well captures the profound sense of isolation and claustrophobia that Charlie feels having been raised as a boy.
When popular daytime soap star Lainey Allen (Crystal Chappell) starts forgetting her lines, she is forced to retire at the height of her 25-year career. She and her partner, Eva, (Jessica Leccia) move to the California coast, hoping that without the stress of daily filming and pressures of celebrity life, they can move on to their next chapter. But without her normal work routine, Lainey’s behavior becomes worrisome, and she starts to act out in odd ways. At Eva’s insistence, they visit a neurologist and learn the devastating news that Lainey has early-onset Alzheimer’s disease.
NOBODY’S WATCHING is a beautiful and touching examination of the immigrant experience in America. Nico, once a famous actor in his native Argentina, has left behind his older lover, Martin, and moved to New York with the promise of film work and a permanent visa. In New York, he juggles a variety of odd jobs to keep himself afloat while pursing acting roles. As time passes and he becomes more desperate, socially and financially, just to stay on the lowest rung of the American economic ladder, he struggles to realize his dream.
